The 2026/27 Champions League league phase uses one 36-club table, not eight separate groups. Each club plays eight games. Its final table position determines whether it advances directly, enters a play-off or is eliminated.
One table, but not every club plays each other
Each team faces eight different opponents once: four matches at home and four away. UEFA's August draw report lists those opponents for every club. A single table does not mean playing all thirty-five other teams, or facing each opponent twice.
What do eighth, ninth and twenty-fourth mean?
After the league phase, positions 1–8 go directly to the round of 16. Positions 9–24 enter the knockout phase play-offs. Positions 25–36 are eliminated. Finishing ninth therefore means an extra tie, not the same route as finishing eighth; twenty-fourth is the last play-off place.
These are final-position rules. An early-season table is not confirmation that a club has already qualified. Use UEFA's official standings linked below for current positions; this guide does not claim a live table snapshot.
How are clubs level on points separated?
A win earns three points, a draw one and a loss none. UEFA's end-of-league-phase tie-break order starts with goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins. Head-to-head results are not on that list.
If clubs remain level, UEFA compares their opponents' collective points, goal difference and goals scored, then disciplinary totals and club coefficient. Article 18 below gives the full order. Its away-goals ranking criterion is different from deciding a two-leg knockout tie.
Two-leg ties, extra time and the final
Knockout ties normally have a home leg and an away leg. Add both scores together: the higher aggregate wins. Equal aggregate scores lead to two fifteen-minute extra-time periods at the end of the second leg, then penalties if the teams are still level. Away goals do not decide the tie.
The final is one match at a predetermined neutral stadium, with extra time and penalties if needed. Do not treat it as another home-and-away round.
For watching from Ethiopia, confirm the actual fixture and kick-off time separately. Our Champions League kick-off guide explains the time check; competition format does not establish a broadcaster or an included viewing package.
Quick answers
Does a Champions League club play every other team?
No. Each club has eight league-phase opponents, with four home matches and four away.
Which places qualify directly for the round of 16?
The first eight at the end of the league phase. Clubs in positions 9–24 must go through the knockout play-offs.
Do away goals decide a tied knockout match?
No. A tied two-leg aggregate goes to extra time and, if still level, penalties. Away goals do appear separately in the league-phase ranking rules.
